Susie's newly famous 13 Bean Soup

The other day I was roaming the bulk food section at Winco and came across a 13 Bean Soup mixture at $1.06 a pound. This sounded like a great bargain for a main dish… so I began to research different things to make with it. I first searched a website that my boss once recommended… http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ and I found a recipe for 16 Bean Soup. I didn’t want to spend more than I had to, so I modified the ingredients to this:

1 onion- cut into four (like apple wedges)
1.5 pounds of 13 bean soup mix (found in Winco's bulk section for $1.06 a pound)
2 T of Steak Seasoning- I used Montreal Steak Seasoning from Costco
1 can of Italian style tomatoes (Winco generic was 57-65 cents)
Water- filled to about 3-4 inches from the top of the pot
1 T Powdered Garlic (approximate)
Salt (to taste- some people like more than others)

I added everything together and let it cook for 10 hours on low in my Crockpot. To serve, you can top this off with cheese and sour cream if you would like… but don’t have to. I added hot sauce to mine but Jerad and Julissa just added cheese and sour cream and Elin had it plain. We also have another 6 serving left! So this is definitely enough to feed a family of 8! Enjoy!

This took about 5 minutes to prepare the night before and that was it… And I think it cost me about $2.00 total and it was great to come home to a delicious home cooked meal that I could smell from the garage as soon as I got out of my car!

Stay tuned for more recipes from Susie in the future.

  2. Thanks for the recipe idea Susie, it's much better and easier to understand than the "recipe" winco gives you..

We did tweak it a little, here is what we did:
    Onion we chopped it finer
2 stick of celery, chopped to bite size pieces.
Switched the Steak seasoning for beef / chicken bullion (8 cups made).
Tin of tomatoes and 1 Tbsp of Italian seasoning.
We only used about a 1 lb of the beans too
Didn't add any salt as the buillion had enough salt in it.
Cooked overnight, and yes it was HARD not to just eat it right then, cooked for a total of about 14 hrs, the last 4 we added some cooked tri-tip we had in the freezer.
Result: It turned out GREAT, didn't need to add any salt / pepper to it, although a touch of a friend's home made hot sauce would probably have made it perfect but added a little to the bowl worked fine...
